OPENING RECEPTION APRIL 6
2:00 PM TO 4:00 PM

Dani Godreau is an emerging artist who recently graduated with her BFA in Studio Art and BA in Art History from Florida State University. She currently teaches art at all levels at Gadsden Art Center, The Tallahassee Senior Center, and  Pyramid Studios (Tallahassee).

Artist Statement:
"My work explores female gender roles and sexuality in Thai culture on both a personal and global level. I was brought up in an environment which blended the heritage of my Thai mother and American father, and as a result I was placed in the unique position of simultaneously belonging to both and neither world. Through my investigation of feminine cultural identity my paintings create a dialogue between Western and Eastern tradition by referencing historical Western artistic themes in tandem with Thai narratives, dance, motifs and patterns. The primary vehicle for this series is the national Thai epic the Ramakien, a story I have grown up with. From this mythology I’ve borrowed the heroine, Sita, who culturally represents the ideal woman. In these paintings I present the Eastern protagonist in poses from western art history like the Pieta, Penitent Mary Magdalene, and Eve. In this way I allow Sita to stand in as a symbol for all women spanning across the Eastern/Western cultural divide."

Jefferson Arts Gallery
2nd Art Grant  through FDOC Ends Successfully
Jefferson Arts Gallery received two grants for $25,000 from the Florida Department of Cultural Affairs for the years 2010-2011 and most recently, 2011-2012. Both grants required a match, so essentially, the grants were worth $50,000 each.  Because Jefferson County is a REDI county, the match could be made through monetary donations, art supplies and volunteer hours. Both grants allowed the gallery to give  free art lessons to children, teens, adults and senior citizens. The artist teachers were paid through the grant, helping to stimulate the economy and provide income for professional artists who would otherwise not have been able to make an income with the art teaching. Children and adults visited our gallery for exhibits and classes, teaching many the value of art in our lives.  Though the grant period is over, we hope you will be continue your generous donations  so we can offer free or discounted lessons. These classes are very important to our community, especially in a down economy.  Thank you for your continued support of Jefferson Arts Gallery.
