The art of Tom Bishop includes images of Moultrie’s beautiful historic buildings and country landscapes. He also loves to try to interpret and reflect the beauty of God’s creation with oil paintings of flowers, birds, and animals. All these paintings will capture a peaceful feeling in the home or office.
He understands his love for art is a gift from God. He did not recognize this gift until he reached retirement age. His dedication to his career and family him focused on success in the business world and left very little time to explore possible interest in art.
Tom was raised in Jacksonville Florida. He attended high school at Englewood High and played football and baseball. His mother painted beautifully but Tom was more interested in sports and did not consider art during these years.
He attended the University of Florida and still did not recognize the value of art in his life. After graduating with a BA degree in Business Administration, Tom started a career with Winn Dixie Stores which grew quickly to store manager and eventually to become a Market Analyst for the grocery chain. About this time, Tom married his wife, Jenny, and today they have two children and four grandchildren.
This experience gained from working with store locations opened the opportunity to do shopping center feasibility studies for Plantec Corporation, a consulting and planning subsidiary of Reynold Smith and Hills, Architects and Engineers in Jacksonville, Florida. This led to a career in Commercial Real Estate as a retail site specialist.
He and Jenny purchased a Bed and Breakfast on Amelia Island. They owned and managed the Bailey House Victorian Bed and Breakfast for 13 years. The management of the Bed and Breakfast required more time than expected and it eventually replaced the real estate career and any hope of beginning art as a new hobby.
Tom did not discover his potential in art until he retired and sold the Bed and Breakfast. He inherited his mother’s paints and brushes. Tom was encouraged to try painting with acrylics by John Dye, art director of University Christian High School in Jacksonville, Florida. Tom and his wife Jenny, moved to Moultrie in June of 2012. They are active in Pleasant Hill Baptist Church of Colquitt County. In Moultrie, Tom met his current art teacher Sally Shovar Byers in March 2015 at the YMCA. Sally introduced Tom to sketching at Shovar Studio and invited him to join her adult art class at the Colquitt County Art Center. Sally Shovar then introduce Tom to painting with oils. Today Tom continues to be amazed at the beauty of oil as a medium and continues to learn as a student at the Shovar Studio. Recent works include oil paintings by Today Tom continues to be amazed at the beauty of oil as a medium and continues to learn as a student at the Shovar Studio. Recent works include oil paintings by pallet knife. Today he is excited to show the beauty of this work.
He also discovered the hidden benefits of art. The effort itself is relaxing and is therapeutic. You never learn it all. For this reason, art requires your attention and replaces the noise in your life. I regret that I did not discover this until my retirement years. At the same time, you develop beautiful decorations that have the potential to reflect the beauty of God’s creation.
